Dakota Ary, 14, and his classmates were in a German lesson when the conversation shifted to religion and homosexuality in Germany.
During the conversation Dakota turned to a friend and said that he believed homosexuality to be wrong because of his Christian faith.
Suspended
However, his comment was overheard by the teacher who sent Dakota to the principal’s office.
On a previous occasion the teacher Kristopher Franks had displayed a picture of two men kissing and told students that homosexuality is becoming more common and that they should just accept it.
Following his comment that homosexuality is wrong Dakota, from Fort Worth in Texas, was initially suspended from class for three days. Now the local school district has sent a letter to Liberty Counsel vindicating Dakota.
Bully
Matthew D. Staver, the founder and chairman of the Liberty Counsel, said: “We are pleased that the school district vindicated Dakota Ary.
“No public school teacher should use the position of authority to bully students to accept homosexuality.
“That is what this teacher did, and he got his hand caught in the cookie jar. We want to make sure this never again happens to any student.”
Apologises
The letter apologises for the delay in returning Dakota to the classroom and states that he “has the right to express an opinion in a manner consistent with law and policy”.
In March it emerged that a schoolchild in America had been banned from handing out invitations to classmates for a Christmas party held in a church.
Local education officials in Pennsylvania said allowing the invitations would breach its rules against promoting Christianity.
