Abortion provider Planned Parenthood has increased the number of abortions it performs while also cutting health services, a US pro-life group has highlighted in a report.
Americans United for Life (AUL) primarily used Planned Parenthood’s own figures for its report and said that abortions make up 94 per cent of its “pregnancy-related services”.
But services such as cancer screening have been cut by 50 per cent in the 11 years the report considers.
Abortion, Inc.
AUL’s President and CEO, Dr Charmaine Yoest, said: “Planned Parenthood deceptively holds itself out as protecting women’s health, as it cuts legitimate health care in favor of abortion sales”.
Planned Parenthood has previously faced scrutiny over its practices and philosophy.
In the new report, which says Planned Parenthood has become “Abortion, Inc.”, AUL says that the organisation “now performs over 70,000 more abortions each year, 200 more abortions each day, than it did in 2004”.
It also states that Planned Parenthood’s adoption referrals are far fewer in number than the abortions it carries out – approximately 201 abortions for every adoption.
Taxpayer funding
AUL said that Planned Parenthood has opened centres or offices of at least 10,000 sq feet – “mega-centers” – in at least 19 cities since 2004.
It comments: “Mega-center expansion coincides with increased taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood; the over half a billion dollars a year that Planned Parenthood now takes from the taxpayer represents over 40 percent of its overall revenue.”
Planned Parenthood now carries out at least 32 per cent of all abortions in the USA. In 2013 it performed 327,653 abortions.
Defies biology
Dr Yoest added: “The time is now for Congress to defund Planned Parenthood and invest taxpayers’ hard-earned money in real healthcare that saves lives and safeguards women’s health”.
Planned Parenthood came under fire in 2011 after one of its managers was filmed advising a man posing as a sex trafficker about his illicit operations. The manager was later sacked.
Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood, claimed in March last year that life begins only when a baby is delivered.
Christian leader Albert Mohler said at the time: “This defies any moral sense, but it also defies modern biology.”
