Trans activists have been slammed for brandishing signs that advocated the ‘decapitation’ of women who uphold the reality of biological sex.
During a protest in Glasgow against Westminster’s decision to block the Scottish Government’s ‘sex-swap’ Bill, activists were pictured holding a sign that said “decapitate Terfs” with an image of a guillotine on. Another stated: “I eat Terfs”.
TERF, an acronym for ‘trans-exclusionary radical feminists’, is used as a slur for women who say that it is not possible for a man to become a woman.
Criticism
Several SNP MSPs attended the demonstration, including some who were photographed with the signs behind them, but claimed they were unaware of the placards at the time.
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also distanced herself from the activists’ views saying: “The placards that I have seen in absolutely no way, shape or form accord with my views and I would condemn the way in which those views were expressed and the views that were expressed there.”
A spokesman for Police Scotland stated that it had received a report on the issue and its “enquiries are ongoing”.
‘Sickening’
On Twitter, the now deactivated account @sky_traffic was blasted for describing a car hitting “the country’s leading defenders of women and girls” and watching them “exploding like bin bags full of baked beans on your windshield”.
The comments appeared to be directed towards women expected to attend Standing for Women’s ‘Glasgow Let Women Speak Rally’ in February.
Twitter users criticised the posts for being “sickening” and “dangerous”, and Police Scotland reported that it has commenced inquiries.
‘Witch-hunt’
In November 2022, a London college removed a sign telling students to report TERFS amid accusations of a “witch-hunt”.
After the on-campus signage was shared on social media, Paul Kirkham — the CEO of The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) — apologised “profusely for any offence caused”.
Earlier last year, police raided the home of a women’s rights campaigner because she promoted the reality of biological sex.
Jennifer Swayne said she was detained by Gwent Police for over 12 hours, after it received several complaints alleging that she had put up posters around Newport with “threatening or abusive writing”.
