Stats: 1.1 per cent of population are lesbian or gay

Official statistics reveal 1.1 per cent of the UK population are gay or lesbian, with 0.5 per cent identifying as bisexual.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) asked over 168,000 people about their “sexual identity” for its survey on the issue.

In its report, looking at figures from 2014, the ONS said 92.8 per cent of people identified as heterosexual, while 0.3 per cent described themselves as “other”.

Careful

The ONS said it developed and tested the question on numerous surveys and carefully asked the question to participants.

Those aged between 16 and 24 were most likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB), while those over 65 were least likely.

The ONS said, “the size of the LGB population has remained the same since 2013” and noted that the slight increase since 2010 is not statistically significant.
