Religious liberty advocate faces jeers at EU meeting

A religious liberty campaigner has been heckled at an EU meeting for saying Christians should not be sent to prison for peacefully expressing their opinions.

A room full of feminist and homosexual activists jeered at Dr Gudrun Kugler when she spoke about the intolerance faced by Christians in Europe.

Some of the crowd said that Christians ought to be thrown in jail if they make a “negative comment” against a “minority group”.

Intolerance

When Dr Kugler spoke about a pharmacy in Germany that had its windows smashed because of its opposition to the morning-after pill, someone shouted out “rightly so!” and others nodded in agreement.

She was delivering a five-year Report on Intolerance against Christians in Europe, including several religious liberty cases from the UK.

Dr Kugler is a lawyer and founder of the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe.

Opposed

She was elected last year to the Advisory Panel of the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Platform.

But her place on the panel was strenuously opposed by members of the European Parliament due to her opposition to homosexual adoption.

Fundamental Rights Agency staff had said they needed three months to clarify that this stance was not a violation of rights.

Disrespectful

Writing about her experience addressing a panel meeting in April she said: “I was aware that my audience would not be favourable, as combatting homophobia is always a main issue at these meetings.

“But I believe in seizing occasions: I asked the numerous gay rights activist groups present to be more respectful when dealing with Christians”, she said.

She argued that a homosexual “kiss in” at Notre Dame Cathedral was “disrespectful” and that the arrest of a street preacher for quoting the Bible was “totalitarian”.
