A Chinese man has made headlines around the world after waking from a twelve-year coma.
Wang Shubao was left in a serious condition after a car accident in Shouguang, Shandong Province, in 2006, aged 36.
His mother Wei Mingying, now 75, has nursed him throughout. Last month she noticed him smiling – a sign that he had regained his consciousness.
Loving mother
Wei spent her life savings on medical expenses for her son and has run up around £13,000 worth of debt.
“There was a time when I wouldn’t eat for an entire month because we were so poor”, Wei said. “My mouth, my tongue was all dry. I would just drink water.”
Although Wang is not yet able to move or speak, he responds to the sound of his mother’s voice.
His mother said: “I am just overjoyed. I hope he will make a full recovery. I will never give up on him. I hope he can call me mum again one day.”
