Undergoing ‘sex-change’ surgery to appear as if you’re female does not make you a woman, a Grammy-award winning singer has said.
Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Macy Gray said: “I will say this, and everybody’s going to hate me, but as a woman, just because you go change your parts doesn’t make you a woman, sorry. I know that for a fact.”
She added that just because a man wants to be called ‘her’ does not change his biological sex.
Truth
Gray said: “Women go through a completely unique experience and surgery or finding yourself doesn’t change that. Being a little girl is a whole epic book, you know? You can’t have that just because you want to be a woman.”
The singer, who won a Grammy for her song ‘I Try’ in 2001, agreed with Morgan that men should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports events due to their biological advantage.
She criticised the abuse JK Rowling has received for speaking “the truth” on the issue, and after the interview Gray too was subjected to derogatory remarks on Twitter.
Backlash
Her remarks sparked a stream of abuse on Twitter, prompting Gray to say she had been “misunderstood”.
In response she said: “I have nothing but love for the LGBTQ+ and transgender community and have been a supporter since Day One.”
“My statement on Piers Morgan was grossly misunderstood. I don’t hate anyone. I respect everyone’s right to feel comfortable in their bodies and live their own truth.”
Mistake
It comes as a man is set to sue the NHS, saying it pressured him into the ‘biggest mistake’ of his life after he lived for around five years as if he were a woman.
While in his twenties, Ritchie Herron, who was battling mental health issues, was told by strangers on the internet he ‘must be trans’. He decided to seek professional help to solve his problems.
He said the NHS clinic he visited failed to take his spiralling mental health crisis into account or properly counsel him about the impact of ‘sex swap’ surgery.
