Activist group TransActual UK has branded doctors ‘transphobes’ for refusing to prescribe sex-swap hormones on conscience grounds.
In a short survey by the controversial group on so-called ‘hormone replacement therapy’ (HRT), 215 respondents who identify as the opposite sex claimed their GP refused to give them cross-sex hormones in the last year.
TransActual UK’s Kewyne Walker claimed: “Transphobic GPs, especially in England, are feeling empowered to unilaterally deprive their patients of critical medicines for reasons of their own bigotry, and every part of the NHS must take some responsibility for letting this happen.”
Personal beliefs
Of the respondents, 56 told TransActual UK they had been refused ‘HRT’ prescriptions “despite having a recommendation from an NHS gender clinic”. Seven of those believed they had been denied a prescription because of the doctor’s “personal beliefs”.
Another doctor reportedly refused to prescribe because they did not “‘recognise’ the NHS gender identity service”.
Other common reasons given by respondents for GPs withholding sex-swap hormones included a lack of competence or training, no policy requirement and no funding.
Terminal cancer
But shocking admissions of the harmful effects of ‘trans-affirming care’ emerged earlier this year in leaked files from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.
In content from the pro-trans group seen by US journalist Michael Shellenberger, one medic wrote: “I have one transition friend/colleague who, after about eight to 10 years of [testosterone] developed hepatocarcinoma [a form of liver cancer].
“To the best of my knowledge, it was linked to his hormone treatment… it was so advanced that he opted for palliative care and died a couple of months later.”
Another indicated their readiness to carry out a double mastectomy for a 16-year-old, despite the fact she had liver cancer. The doctor noted: “The oncologist and surgeon both have indicated that the likely offending agent(s) are the hormones.”
