Abortions in Hungary have fallen by almost a quarter, after the introduction of pro-life measures by the Government.
Between 2010 and 2015, the total number of abortions each year dropped by 22.9 per cent.
Since 2012, the Hungarian constitution has stated that life begins at conception.
Pro-life
The Hungarian Government actively promotes adoption where women do not want to keep their baby, arranges educational classes and also provides aid to families.
In 2011, there was a Government-led pro-life campaign which included posters with an image of a baby in the womb, with the caption saying, “I understand that you are not yet ready for me, but give me up to the adoption agency, LET ME LIVE!”
The Government has been criticised for using European Union money to fund the campaign. An EU Commissioner said at the time that the campaign “goes against European values.”
Counselling
Abortion is allowed in Hungary up to twelve weeks on demand. In cases of severe disability, it is allowed up to 24 weeks.
However, women who want to have an abortion are required to go through counselling sessions and must wait at least three days between requesting an abortion and having one.
