Death and disease cannot separate Christians from God’s “everlasting love”, the Scottish Parliament has been told.
Leading Holyrood’s Time for Reflection, Adrian Ferguson of Perth Gospel Hall told assembled MSPs that one day, everyone’s power, wealth and influence will be “irrelevant” and “long forgotten”.
He contrasted this truth with an account of how his late mother was deteriorating from vascular dementia and losing all of her life’s possessions, yet she was able to declare: “I have Jesus in here and he is Lord, and they can’t take that away from me.”
‘Hope’
Ferguson reflected: “One week after my mother’s death, I conducted her burial service and my text was John, chapter 11, verse 35, which simply says, ‘Jesus wept.’ Jesus wept at a graveside. He does not stand aloof, distant or unreachable.
I have Jesus in here and he is Lord, and they can’t take that away from me.
“Rather, he offers us hope, salvation and peace. His death and resurrection paid the price required for mankind to be forgiven for our sins. Surely this is a peace that we all need today?”
He emphasised: “He wants to be in our lives and fill every fibre of our being. He is the living God, who provides new birth to all who follow him. While disease can separate us from memories, the Bible continues to declare: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love.’
“God’s love never runs out.”
Resurrection
Holyrood’s Time for Reflection, which is held each Tuesday afternoon, includes representatives from different faiths, as well as those of no religious affiliation.
In 2022, the Associate Pastor at Carrubbers Christian Centre told MSPs that despite humanity’s sin, God in his love didn’t remain distant from our “confusion and chaos, misery and meaninglessness, injustice and inhumanity”.
David Nixon said: “Instead, Jesus has written himself into the story of this world. He’s become one of us – he suffered among us, he’s died on the Cross for us for our sins, he’s risen again from the dead showing that evil does not have to have the last word on any of our lives.”
In an exclusive interview with The Christian Institute, the pastor said “we’re praying that God’s word will be effective” for non-Christian MSPs and for all those who have shared and watched the video on social media, which has been viewed thousands of times.
