The new French Government has announced plans for taxpayers to completely cover medical costs of abortions.
Currently, French women are able to claim back between 70-80 percent of abortion costs, which range between 200 and 450 euros (£160-£360).
But in the new social security budget, plans are to fully reimburse termination costs and increase the amount clinics can charge.
Cost
The move is likely to cost 31.7 million euros in the first year of operation.
The French Government said the change was “necessary to ensure all women have equal access to abortion.”
Pro-abortion campaigners have long-argued for women in France to have the cost of abortions completely covered by the state.
Promised
The move was promised by Socialist President, François Hollande, before he won the election in June.
He also pledged to make sure terminations were available at every major hospital in the country.
The current law in France allows abortion on demand up to the 12th week of pregnancy.
Abortions
In 2010, 225,000 abortions were carried out in France.
François Hollande has also pledged to introduce same-sex marriage, and a draft law is set to be presented to the cabinet for approval this month.
