Footballer praises God’s mercy as he becomes a pastor

Former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino has given glory to God after becoming Pastor of an evangelical church in Brazil.

Firmino, who was baptised in 2020, co-founded Manah Church in Macieo three years ago and has now been appointed as one of its ministers.

Posting on Instagram, he said that since his encounter with Christ “a desire burned” in his heart and now he has “another desire and responsiblilty” to become a pastor.

Ephesians

Firmino quoted Ephesians 3:20, saying: “Now to him who is able to do infinitely more than all that we ask or think, according to his power that works within us.’ It’s all about his power since in us there is no merit.”

He said he was “flabbergasted when we see the size of God’s mercy upon us”, adding: “He really picks the unlikely! Thank you Jesus.”

Firmino is still a professional footballer and has two years left on his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli.

‘Never looked back’

In 2020, former Crystal Palace and Barnsley forward Bruce Dyer revealed how God pulled him out of a life of drink and drugs and turned his life around.

By the time he was 23 he was depressed and ready to quit football, but after learning of his brother’s testimony, who became a Christian while in prison, Dyer said “I never looked back”.

Now retired from football, he has helped to plant Love Life UK Church, an independent evangelical fellowship where he serves as pastor.
