Fianna Fáil confirmed as largest party in new Dáil

Fianna Fáil has been confirmed as the largest party in the new Dáil following last week’s General Election.

It secured 48 seats, ahead of Sinn Féin on 39 and Fine Gael with 38. Other parties represented in the 34th Dáil include the Irish Labour Party (11), the Social Democrats (11) and Independent Ireland (4).

With 88 seats required to form a majority (out of 174), Ireland is almost certainly set for another coalition government of Fianna Fáil and junior partner Fine Gael. Voter turnout, at 59.7 per cent, was the lowest in more than a century.

Seanad

Elections to Seanad must take place not later than 6 February 2025.

The new Dáil, outgoing Senators and members of county or city councils will elect 43 of the 60 seats in the new Seanad.

Six more Senators will be elected by graduates of certain universities, and eleven will be nominated by the new Taoiseach.

Values

The Christian Institute’s Director Ciarán Kelly said: “The new Dáil could vote on laws affecting religious liberty, freedom of speech, abortion, assisted suicide, drugs legalisation and sex education.

“As we have done from our foundation, we shall continue to pray for, and encourage, political leadership which retrains evil, promotes good, and seeks to protect the most vulnerable members our society.”
