Christians are calling for prayer after several churches were attacked in Indonesia – with a single family suspected of carrying out the bombings.
A number of people were killed in the atrocity, which was claimed by ISIS.
UK-based charity Open Doors called on Christians to “labour in prayer” for Indonesia.
Sunday services
According to reports, three bombs exploded in churches across the country’s second-largest city, Surabaya, as services began on Sunday morning.
National Police chief Tito Karnavian said: “We have identified the bombers. It is highly likely that they shared a familial background.”
Police said Dita Oepriarto had dropped his wife and two daughters, aged twelve and nine, at the Diponegoro Indonesia Christian Church. She then detonated a bomb outside, killing herself and the two children.
Oepriarto blew himself up at Surabaya Center Pentecostal Church, while his two sons killed themselves at Santa Maria Roman Catholic church.
Comfort
Following the attacks, police uncovered bombs at other churches and on Monday another family group of suicide bombers targeted a police station.
Open Doors places Indonesia at number 38 on a list of the 50 most dangerous places to follow Jesus.
It called for Christians to pray:
• For comfort for those who mourn, and healing for those who have been injured
• That God would confuse the plans of those who are seeking to do harm in Indonesia, and that God would change their hearts and draw them to Himself
• For wisdom for church leaders, Open Doors workers and others who are seeking to comfort those affected by these attacks
• For courage for Christians in Indonesia, and that these attacks would not stop them from meeting together and being a witness for Christ.
