Children in Need boss ‘hounded out’ after axing funding for trans youth charity

The former Chairwoman of BBC Children in Need has spoken out about the internal opposition she faced to ending funding for controversial charity LGBT Youth Scotland (LGBTYS).

Rosie Millard, who resigned last month, raised concerns about the pro-trans group earlier this year, citing its support for treatment that harms children. Further grants were withdrawn after an investigation. LGBTYS has been awarded £466,000 by Children in Need over the past 14 years.

An inquiry has also been launched into LGBTYS by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), due to concerns over its support of puberty blockers and chest binding – treatments discredited by the highly respected Cass Review.

’Thrown under the bus’

Millard said: “I felt this charity was harming children, and the mission for Children in Need is to support and help children, help them be the best they can be and not harm them.”

As a result, she has been attacked as being “anti-inclusivity”, and complained she had been “thrown under the bus” by colleagues.

If that is being a ‘Terf’ then I’m proud to be one. Rosie Millard, former Chairwoman, Children in Need

She subsequently resigned as Chairwoman due to the lack of support she received, stating: “such is the pressure to appear inclusive, that people bend over backwards to show that they are not prejudiced”.

Addressing concerns

A spokesman for OSCR explained that it had “received concerns about the charity in the past year” and would be “working with the charity so that appropriate follow-up action can be taken by the trustees”.

MSP Tess White said: “Given the serious concerns surrounding this organisation, OSCR’s decision to launch an investigation is a welcome step.

“SNP ministers should finally show some common sense and pause funding for the charity until this situation is resolved.”
