The Canadian Government has been roundly condemned for forcing some employers to endorse abortion.
It has told employers involved in a scheme that provides grants for summer jobs, to sign an “attestation” to agree with “reproductive rights”.
The attestation also requires businesses to respect the right not to be discriminated against including on grounds of sexual orientation and “gender identity or expression”.
‘Wrong’
The move has been denounced by opponents as ‘discriminatory’ and ‘totalitarian’.
The Government scheme is used by small businesses, non-profit organisations and public sector employers to create summer jobs for students between the age of 15 and 30.
Conservative MP Brad Trost said it means employers have to be in line with the position of Justin Trudeau’s Government on abortion, same-sex marriage, and trans rights or else be ineligible to receive a grant.
He added: “That’s wrong, that’s discrimination. Canadians are allowed to have different political beliefs than the government of the day and they shouldn’t have their funding be cut off because they disagree with the government.”
‘Extremely troubling’
Fellow Conservative Candice Bergen also slammed the move as “extremely troubling and un-Canadian.”
“A Government should never be telling its citizens what they should and should not believe.”
“What we’re seeing when it comes to this Liberal Government is that if you don’t share exactly the same views that they do, you are likely to be left out in the cold”, she added.
‘Totalitarianism’
And Jack Fonseca, senior political strategist for Campaign Life Coalition, said the move is “a ground-breaking first step on the inevitable path to raw totalitarianism”.
A petition has been launched by LifeSiteNews which calls on Trudeau’s Government to reverse its stance. It has already gathered over 7,000 signatures.
