The official opposition party in Canada has voted to protect under-18s from ‘sex-swap’ drugs and surgery.
At the Conservatives’ national convention in Quebec City, delegates backed a resolution “prohibiting life-altering medicinal or surgical interventions” for gender-confused children.
An election is expected in 2025, and the party is currently well ahead of Justin Trudeau’s Liberals in the polls.
‘Brainwashing’
Delegate Scott Anderson argued that children were unable to make the “substantial decision” to medically ‘transition’.
“We don’t allow children to drink, or drive, or engage in sexual activity, or join the military, or even vote before the age of adulthood”, Anderson said.
“And the reason for this is widely understood by every adult in Canada. It is because children lack the capacity to fully understand the implications of major life decisions”.
Another delegate added, “we can’t let kids decide because our brains don’t even fully develop until our mid-20s, we need to stop this kind of brainwashing”, concluding: “they need therapy, they don’t need surgery and medications”.
National scandal
Women’s rights campaigner Mia Hughes welcomed the position adopted by the party “after years of wilfully ignoring the Canadians raising the alarm about the scandal of pediatric medical transition”.
She attributed the change of direction to “brave Canadians” who have refused to be “silenced any longer by the tiny minority of aggressive trans activists who’ve dominated the narrative for so long”, and urged party leader Pierre Poilievre to include the policy in his election manifesto.
In June, the Canadian Paediatric Society published a position statement in which it recommended a ‘trans-affirming approach’ to caring for young people, including prescribing puberty blockers and sex-swap hormones.
