Arizona’s pro-life law must be upheld, court rules

A law upholding protections for the unborn must be enforced in the US state of Arizona, a judge has ruled.

The law only permits abortion when the mother’s life is in danger. There is a two to five year prison sentence for anyone who pushes a mother to obtain an abortion for any other reason.

The safeguard was blocked in 1973 a few weeks after the US Supreme Court reinterpreted the constitution to grant a right to abortion across America. It should have been reinstated when Roe v Wade was overturned in June, but pro-abortionists obtained an injunction, which has now been lifted.

Vulnerable

Judge Kellie Johnson of the Arizona Superior Court in Pima County stated that “because the legal basis for the judgment entered in 1973 has now been overruled, it must vacate the judgment in its entirety”.

Arizona’s Attorney General Mark Brnovich tweeted: “We applaud the court for upholding the will of the legislature” and “I have and will continue to protect the most vulnerable Arizonans.”

Earlier this year, the state passed legislation outlawing abortion after 15 weeks and it is to be determined which law will now take precedence.

UK

In the UK, pro-abortion MPs demanded that abortion be made a human right, following the US Supreme Court overturning of Roe v Wade.

However, Christian MPs spoke out in opposition, including Danny Kruger, who stated: “They think that women have an absolute right to bodily autonomy in this matter. However, I think that, in the case of abortion, that right is qualified by the fact that another body is involved.”

DUP MP Carla Lockhart said that “abortion is not and has not ever been deemed a human right in any binding international law.

“In fact, almost the opposite is the case. Some internationally binding treaties reference a right to life, such as article 6 of the international covenant on civil and political rights”.
