A record number of people gathered in London for the annual UK March for Life, organisers have reported.
According to police estimates the event attracted 7,000 supporters for the march which ended with a gathering in Parliament Square.
It comes just a few days after home DIY abortions became standard practice in England and Wales.
’10 Million Too Many’
The event was supported by pro-life organisations from across the UK, under the theme: ’10 Million Too Many’ – a reference to the approximate number of abortions in the UK since the Abortion Act was passed in 1967.
Referring to the recent overturning of Roe v Wade in the US, Madeline Page of The Alliance of Pro-life Students said: “We’ve seen a steady increase in the amount of young people wanting to take part in pro-life events since the news from America”.
She added: “Many of these are stepping out for the first time and feel that since this issue is being talked about more, it’s now acceptable to disclose their beliefs”.
‘Image of God’
Speaking to pro-life supporters ahead of the march, The Christian Institute’s Ciarán Kelly said: “Somewhere between 550 and 600 children are aborted every day in the UK. Every one of those is a human being.
“These are lives that could have been lived but were never given the chance. Whether able-bodied or disabled, they would have been born into a life.”
He added: “As an evangelical Christian I say unashamedly that every one of them is made in the image of God and every one of them has value because of that.
“The Bible says: ‘Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves’. Well, the unborn have no voice. So we must be that voice. We must be the voice for the voiceless.”
Home abortions
Last week, temporary regulations allowing women who are less than ten weeks pregnant to take abortion pills received through the post became permanent in the UK.
But women are already speaking out about the dangers, including inadequate checks during telephone consultations, controlling partners and medical and emotional trauma.
According to a recent GB News freedom of information investigation, six ambulance services reported a rise in the number of ‘abortion pill’ 999 calls and despatches from 2019 to 2020 when the temporary measures were first put in place.
London Ambulance Service saw the number of call-outs rise by 61 per cent, from 93 in 2019 to 150 in 2020.
