Free speech in universities
Examples of speakers with strong views being ‘no-platformed’ at universities have hit the headlines on a regular basis in recent years. These have prompted concern that free speech is being restricted at universities, particularly around contentious issues like transgenderism.
In 2017, Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) launched an inquiry into freedom of speech in universities. The JCHR report and its subsequent guidance on free speech have, in turn, informed helpful guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
Here, we have drawn together key documents concerning free speech at universities into one place.
