‘Gay marriage probably not for me’ says Ian McKellen

Film star and gay campaigner Sir Ian McKellen says same-sex marriage is “probably not” for him.

Sir Ian, who co-founded homosexual lobby group Stonewall, thinks marriage should be available to same-sex couples.

But “it’s probably not for me”, he told The Daily Telegraph.

Fuss

Last month homosexual playwright and author Alan Bennett said he cannot see what all the “fuss” is about over gay marriage.

Mr Bennett, who is in a civil partnership, said the whole issue had become a “storm in a teacup”.

In August last year homosexual celebrity Christopher Biggins said that “civil partnerships are fantastic” but he does not see the need for same-sex marriage.

Waste of time

In October last year gay film star Rupert Everett voiced opposition to redefining marriage – saying he thought all marriage is a “waste of time”.

And earlier last year Julie Bindel, a lesbian, said she believed the campaign for same-sex marriage is a “waste of time and effort”.

As well as opposing plans for same-sex marriage, Miss Bindel also called for marriage to be outlawed.

Priority

Writing on the Guardian website, she said “fighting for the rights for same-sex marriage is going too far”, and that she “would outlaw marriage for everyone”.

Polling shows that only a minority of gay people, 39 per cent, believe gay marriage is a priority.

And according to the Government only 3 per cent of gay people would enter a same-sex marriage.
