Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill

Labour MPs get free
vote on embryos Bill

Last updated: 13 December 2007

The Labour Party has decided to allow its MPs to vote according to their conscience on a controversial embryos Bill.

Previously, it had been expected that Labour MPs would be whipped to vote in favour of the Government's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.

Several pro-life Labour MPs recently signalled their intention to rebel against the whips, arguing that the Bill involves matters of conscience rather than party political issues.

The Bill contains measures which could open the way for animal-human embryos, genetically-modified babies with two mums and one dad and so-called 'saviour siblings'.

Amendments to the law on abortion are also likely, though all MPs are traditionally allowed a free vote on this issue.

The Bill is expected to come before the Commons in the New Year.
